The Civil War Paths project is recruiting a post-doctoral Research Associate, who will lead on research covering cases of conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa. The successful applicant will join a team of six, for a three-year funding term (starting 1st January 2022). This is a full-time post; the deadline for applications is 1st December 2021.
Our project, ‘Understanding Civil War from Pre- to Post-War Stages: A Comparative Approach’, is funded by a £1.2m UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship awarded to Dr Anastasia Shesterinina. As a team, we’re working to generate cutting-edge insights on civil war from pre- to post-war stages, through fieldwork-intensive qualitative comparison. This work will shape new understandings of the paths civil wars follow and inform policy on this dominant form of armed conflict.
The new Research Associate will have an exceptional opportunity to be part of the project while advancing their own research; benefit from mentorship, methods training, and career development; and build a strong academic and non academic network. Based at the Centre for the Comparative Study of Civil War established to host the project, they will work with the rest of the team to advance civil war theory; develop a coordinated approach to fieldwork; conduct fieldwork in relevant field site(s), including in-depth interviews; collaborate on analysing data to produce high-quality outputs; and actively contribute to the life of the project and its intellectual community.
We’re looking for candidates nearing the completion of a PhD in Politics, Development Studies, Geography, History, Journalism, or another relevant field (preferably on a topic related to civil war), and bringing substantial expertise and experience of qualitative data collection and analysis (preferably based on indepth interviews), on cases of civil war.
Due to the multi-region nature of the project, we are looking for candidates with regional expertise and fluency in language(s) necessary for qualitative research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
